Hunting for their meat and eggs took the Kemp's ridley turtle to the brink of extinction until conservation efforts brought their numbers back up into the thousands. It remains listed as critically endangered on the IUCN red list and adults are still killed as bycatch by the fishing and shrimping industries.

As their breeding range is specifically a small stretch of coastline in the Gulf of Mexico Kemp's ridleys are very vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution, especially oil spills in the area.

But there is hope. Conservation measures, such as declaring the nesting beach of Rancho Nuevo a National Reserve, mean that there is now an estimated female breeding population of up to 10,000.
